Variables

  • Retrofit or fitted with the panels Fitting storage alongside a new array costs £2,600–£4,400 incremental because it shares the scaffold, survey and certification. The same battery retrofitted later is £5,400–£7,200 — you pay for the access twice.
  • Your evening load, not your roof The right size is whatever covers your evening and overnight use — usually 8–13.5 kWh. Sizing to the array rather than the load buys capacity that never cycles.
  • AC-coupled vs DC-coupled AC-coupled works with any existing solar inverter, which is what makes a retrofit straightforward. DC-coupled shares a hybrid inverter and is marginally more efficient — the better choice when solar and battery go in together.
  • Tariff A battery on a flat tariff saves on self-consumption alone. On a smart import/export tariff it can also charge cheaply overnight and export at peak — which roughly doubles what the same hardware earns.
  • Where it is mounted Garage and utility installs are straightforward. Outdoor mounting needs an IP-rated unit; loft installs need a structural check and a longer cable run.

Common questions

FAQs

How much does home battery storage cost in Greater Manchester?
A 10 kWh battery retrofitted to existing panels runs £5,400 to £7,200 fitted; a 5 kWh modular starter is £3,800 to £5,200; a Tesla Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh starts around £6,800. Fitting a battery at the same time as a new solar array costs only £2,600 to £4,400 on top, because it shares the scaffold and commissioning.
Is a battery worth it without solar panels?
It can be. A battery on its own charges overnight on a cheap off-peak rate and powers the house through expensive peak hours, which saves meaningfully before a single panel goes up. Paired with solar it does more, because your own generation charges it for free during the day.
What size battery do we need?
Size it to your evening and overnight usage, not to your roof. For most Greater Manchester homes that is 8–13.5 kWh. Smaller households can start at 5 kWh with a modular system and add capacity later; EV and heat-pump households usually justify more.
Can a battery be added to solar panels another company installed?
Yes. An AC-coupled battery works alongside virtually any existing solar inverter regardless of who fitted it. We survey the existing array first — if the inverter is near end-of-life, a battery-ready hybrid replacement is often the better-value route than coupling to ageing kit.
How long do home batteries last?
The LFP batteries we fit carry 10 to 15-year warranties and are rated by cycles rather than years. In normal domestic use — roughly one cycle a day — they comfortably outlast the inverter, which is typically the first component to need replacing at year 10 to 12.
