Export tariff comparison

Smart Export Guarantee Explained

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is the UK government scheme that requires energy suppliers to pay for surplus solar exported to the grid. Rates vary widely — from 1p/kWh at the worst end to 24p+ at the best.

Who wins on this tariff

  • Anyone with MCS-certified solar PV
  • Battery owners who can time exports to peak windows (Flux)
  • Solar + battery + EV households consolidating tariffs with one supplier
Worst for

When to skip it

  • Systems without a SMETS2 smart meter (suppliers won't pay export without half-hourly data)
  • Self-installs without MCS certification (excluded from SEG)
The Numbers

What it's worth

A 4 kWp solar system in the Midlands generates ~3,400 kWh/year. Without battery, ~2,400 kWh exports to grid; on Octopus Outgoing Fixed at 15p that's £360/year. Switch to Flux peak-window export at 24p and the same household earns ~£500/year. EDF's 5.6p variable rate costs the same household £225/year — a £275 difference for one decision.

Frequently Asked

FAQs about SEG

Do I need SEG to install solar?
No, but it makes the economics work. Without SEG, your surplus solar goes to grid for free — adding a battery or switching to a paying SEG tariff captures that value.
Can I switch SEG tariffs anytime?
Yes — most are no-fixed-term contracts. You can switch energy supplier or change tariff within Octopus (Outgoing → Flux → Agile) any time. Octopus takes ~14 days to enact.
What if I don't have a smart meter?
You'll need one for SEG. Suppliers install SMETS2 free as part of the solar handover — typically 2–4 weeks after MCS commissioning. Once registered, SEG payments backdate to commissioning.
How are SEG payments made?
Quarterly or annually as a credit on your bill (Octopus, E.ON Next), or paid directly to your bank (EDF, OVO). Octopus shows live export earnings in the app.
