Tesla Powerwall 3 vs Tesla Powerwall 2

Tesla Powerwall 3 launched in the UK in 2024 with major upgrades over Powerwall 2 — integrated inverter, 11.5 kW continuous output (up from 5 kW), LFP chemistry. If you're buying new, Powerwall 3 is the call. If you have Powerwall 2, here's whether to upgrade.

Our verdict

For new buyers: Powerwall 3 every time. For Powerwall 2 owners: don't upgrade just for the spec — your existing battery still works fine and is supported with firmware until at least 2030. Wait for Powerwall 4 (rumoured 2027) or until your Powerwall 2 capacity drops below 70% (warranty trigger).

Frequently asked

Common questions

Should I upgrade my Powerwall 2 to Powerwall 3?
Usually no. The improvements in Powerwall 3 (integrated inverter, higher power output) don't justify replacing a working Powerwall 2. Wait for it to fail, drop below warranty threshold, or until Powerwall 4 launches.
Does Tesla still support Powerwall 2?
Yes. Firmware updates continue, app support continues, parts available. Tesla has committed to Powerwall 2 support through at least 2030.
Can I add a Powerwall 3 alongside my Powerwall 2?
No — they don't mix. Tesla supports Powerwall + expansion units of the same generation. To go from 13.5 kWh to 27 kWh on Powerwall 2, add a second PW2. Powerwall 3 expansion units are PW3-only.
