The Challenge
A working dairy farm in Shropshire was facing annual electricity bills of over £30,000 for milking equipment, refrigeration, and water heating. With energy costs rising sharply, the farm needed a solution that would reduce operational costs without disrupting daily farming activities.
Our Solution
We designed and installed an 85kW ground-mount solar array on unused pasture land adjacent to the main dairy buildings. The system comprises 204 high-efficiency panels angled at 35 degrees for optimal year-round generation. A 3-phase commercial inverter was specified to match the farm's existing electrical infrastructure, with generation metered separately for Smart Export Guarantee payments.
The Results
The system generates approximately 78,000 kWh per year, offsetting 60% of the farm's electricity consumption. Annual savings exceed £18,500 including SEG income. The project achieved full payback within 5.2 years and will continue generating free electricity for 25+ years. The farm has also reduced its carbon footprint by 18.2 tonnes of CO2 annually.
