Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Explained: Get Paid for Your Solar
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus solar energy sent to the grid. In 2026, the best rates are from Octopus (up to 15p/kWh with Outgoing Agile) and E.ON (5.5p/kWh flat). ## How much can you earn? A typical 4kWp system without battery exports ~1,500 kWh/year. At 15p/kWh that's £225/year just from export. Adding a battery reduces export but increases self-consumption savings — usually better overall. ## Best SEG tariffs 2026 1. **Octopus Outgoing Agile:** Variable 0-30p/kWh, avg 13-15p 2. **Octopus Outgoing Fixed:** 15p/kWh flat 3. **E.ON Next Export:** 5.5p/kWh flat 4. **British Gas Export:** 6.4p/kWh (customers only) ## Setup You need MCS-certified installation, a smart meter (SMETS2), and to apply via your chosen SEG supplier. We handle MCS documentation as part of every install. Full [solar panel service](/solar-panels), or see [battery storage](/battery-storage) for self-consumption optimisation.
