Installing an EV charger at home cuts your charging costs by 70% versus public networks. Here's what to expect.
## 7kW vs 22kW
**7kW:** Charges a 60 kWh EV from 20%-80% in ~5 hours. Works on standard single-phase supply. Suits 95% of UK homes.
**22kW:** Charges the same car in ~1.5 hours, but requires three-phase power (most UK homes don't have it). Only worth it for high-mileage fleets.
## Grants
The OZEV EVHS grant closed in 2022 for homeowners. Flat owners and tenants can still claim £350. Commercial WCS grants of £350/socket remain available.
## Solar integration
If you have solar + battery, an Ohme or Zappi charger can charge your EV from surplus solar — effectively free driving. Combined with Octopus Intelligent Go (7p/kWh overnight), this is the cheapest way to drive in the UK.
